SouthPark's New Baking Shop Is Staying Long After the Holidays

King Arthur Baking Co. set Saturday, Nov. 7 as the grand opening for its pop-up at Apex SouthPark, Suite S160 at 4425 Sharon Road. SouthPark Community Partners says the shop is expected to stay through early 2028. That means it covers this Thanksgiving, this December, all of 2027 and next year's holidays too. For anyone in SouthPark who hosts, a store selling flour, sourdough starter and baking tools is now a regular stop for the next two seasons.

A pop-up with a long lease on the calendar

King Arthur has tried this format before, and the earlier dates show how different the Charlotte plan is. In its September 2024 announcement, the company described two pop-ups that ran on very different schedules.

Location Opened Expected to run through Approximate length
Boston, MA Oct. 3, 2024 Dec. 31, 2024 About three months
Fairfax, VA Sept. 16, 2024 July 31, 2025 About ten and a half months
Charlotte, NC, Apex SouthPark Nov. 7, 2026 Early 2028 More than a year

Boston was a holiday shop and closed at New Year's. Fairfax stayed most of a year. The SouthPark location is on track to outlast both. According to Charlotte On The Cheap, it is also the first time King Arthur has brought its pop-up format to North Carolina. The Charlotte Business Journal reported the move in October as the company expanding into Charlotte.

So this isn't a seasonal novelty to catch before it's gone. It's a new specialty grocery stop that happens to open right before the busiest baking weeks of the year.

What's on the shelves, and what's around it

SouthPark Community Partners lists the stock as premium flours, specialized baking mixes, fresh sourdough starters, cookbooks, professional kitchen tools and hard-to-find appliances. Charlotte On The Cheap adds cake and cookie mixes and accessories. It also reported that the first 50 opening-day visitors were set to get a free King Arthur tote. King Arthur's Charlotte store page has a sign-up for store events and sales updates, so check there for anything beyond the basics.

The address matters for a hosting run. Apex SouthPark combines the Element SouthPark apartments, the Hyatt Centric hotel and SouthPark Church with ground-floor shops and restaurants. The same 4425 Sharon Road address covers Gourmand Market, Moon Thai & Japanese, Snooze an A.M. Eatery and Steak 48, all listed about 136 feet from the pop-up. Brock Moran is right next door. Flour, a cookbook, breakfast at Snooze and a stop at Gourmand Market can all happen in one parking-garage visit.

Pairing the flour with a pour

Holiday baking rarely happens without something to drink, and SouthPark's November wine calendar is packed into the same few weeks the pop-up opens. Here are the dated events still ahead as of Nov. 12, in order:

  1. Saturday, Nov. 14: Second Saturdays Market. Local shops and makers set up from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next to Legion Brewing at 5610 Carnegie Blvd. It's a good place for hostess gifts and handmade table pieces.
  2. Monday, Nov. 16: Alsace and Austria wine class at Arthur's. This session focuses on Thanksgiving pairings and runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. It costs $50 per person and is listed for Arthur's Wine Shop on the lower level of Belk at SouthPark Mall. Register through the SouthPark listing or by calling or texting 704-366-8610. The sign-up form says the final location depends on class size.
  3. Wednesday, Nov. 18: Arthur's Holiday Wine Festival. More than 50 wines chosen for holiday meals and gifts, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at $20 per person paid at the door. Arthur's own events page has a registration link.
  4. Saturdays, Nov. 21, Nov. 28 and Dec. 5: free tastings at Arthur's. Each runs noon to 4 p.m. at the SouthPark Mall shop.

Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26 this year. The class and the festival both happen the week before, which leaves time to buy a case after deciding what goes with the turkey.

The Saturday routine on Barclay Downs

Arthur's tastings run on set dates. Reid's Fine Foods at 4331 Barclay Downs Dr. holds a free tasting every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with light bites and rotating Reid's specialty items. Its listed dates continue through Jan. 23, 2027, and beyond. If you'd rather not cook the whole meal, Reid's Thanksgiving page lets you order a full meal or individual items through its SouthPark location. A separate holiday meal page does the same for December.

Put together, a SouthPark host can buy flour and starter on Sharon Road, taste wine on Barclay Downs, and order the sides that won't get made from scratch, all within a short drive.

When guests are in town

Hosting also means getting people out of the house. SouthPark Community Partners' holiday guide lists several standing options through the end of the year:

  • Tea time at Chez Marie. This French bakery serves a tea party with your choice of tea, finger sandwiches and pastries, daily through Dec. 31.
  • Tableside s'mores at Oak Steakhouse. Guests get a personal fire pit at the table, daily through Dec. 31.
  • Holiday tiki mugs at DTR SouthPark. Seasonal cocktails served in holiday-themed mugs, daily through Dec. 31.
  • Photos with Santa at SouthPark Mall. Daily since Nov. 6, by reservation.
  • Opening reception at Anne Neilson Fine Art on Dec. 3. Complimentary wine and beer with the gallery's latest exhibition.

The Apex block comes back into play in December. Starting Dec. 1, the Hyatt Centric has the Season's Greetings mural by Charlotte artist Amber Thompson, along with a station for letters to Santa. Children who leave a return address get a reply, thanks to The Sharon at SouthPark. On Sunday, Dec. 6, SouthPark Mall hosts a sensory-friendly Caring Santa visit from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for children with special needs and their families. SouthPark Regional Library repeats its watercolor-in-a-sketchbook class with artist Marco Franco on Dec. 12. Steak 48, a few doors from the King Arthur shop, offers extended Christmas Eve service on Dec. 24.

Why the 2028 date changes the math

Boston's shop closed after one holiday season. SouthPark's is expected to stay open through the off-season. The sourdough starter bought this month can be refilled in spring. Kitchen tools that sell out before Christmas can be picked up in February. And when next Thanksgiving comes, the same Suite S160 is expected to still be stocked, a few steps from Steak 48 and the Hyatt Centric mural.

Over this season, the block at 4425 Sharon Road has added one more errand to its list. Shops that make a SouthPark address easier to live in tend to come up when owners start thinking about value.
